India Government Will Not Label Asbestos Hazardous
The government of India does not feel that asbestos should be labeled hazardous or even ban from import. What this means is that anyone who travels to India to live or visit could be put into a dangerous situation if the asbestos fibers are released into the air. Now that you know this, it is not wise to travel to that area. If you do travel to India and are exposed to airborne asbestos fibers, will you be able to file a lawsuit against the government.
Any asbestos attorney will tell you that it is hard to file lawsuits against other countries and win even if you could. The asbestos lawyers will tell you that it is not easy to suit a country because you were exposed to asbestos because they do not ban it from being imported or used.
There will be another meeting and debate at the end of October 2008 in Rome to see if asbestos should be added to the Rotterdam Convention list. As of right now, Canada and Russia are the exporters of asbestos and India is the biggest importer. The debate does not look promising for adding asbestos to the Rotterdam Convention. This means that India will remain an unsafe place to visit.
Asbestos removal is done by professionals for the reason. Asbestos is so harmful to ones health. India will have many decades of suffering because of their inability to stop the imports and use materials that are just as cheap and work just as well.
