Asbestos Not Added To The Rotterdam Convention

The meeting of countries did not accomplish much the last few days of October because asbestos was not voted for and added to the Rotterdam Convention as a material that could not be imported into other countries. Individual governments can allow or deny imports from other countries, but most countries will allow asbestos into their countries.

What does this mean for other countries and you?

This means that other governments are not taking the asbestos threat seriously and allowing the people and tourist to be exposed to asbestos. If you live in or visit any of the countries that are importing asbestos from Canada mostly, you are putting your own health at risk. If the asbestos removal or asbestos installation is being done while you are around the area, you can be exposed without your knowledge. This means that everyone is at risk.

Should you be concerned even if you do not travel?

The answer is yes. People are going to be exposed to asbestos and could eventually die if they develop mesothelioma cancer. This is major concern for everyone. What if the other countries that allow asbestos imports use the materials in production of things that are then exported to the United States? You would then be handling something that has asbestos as a material in it.

“None of the asbestos attorneys can help with this problem because there is no know exposure and bring lawsuits against other countries is not going to go far in any court. The only way to avoid this potential problem is to by things that are made in countries that disallow asbestos imports or buy things that are made only in the United States.”
