Chicago Beach Is Contaminated With Asbestos
Chicago’s beaches have been linked to asbestos contamination from the release of asbestos into Lake Michigan by John-Manville Asbestos Superfund. The asbestos contamination reaches as far south as Chicago’s Oak Street beach. This was reported back in May 2008. The EPA conducted a test back in 2002 and concluded that there are millions of asbestos fibers per liter of water in Lake Michigan.
This means that anyone swimming or even playing in the sand could be exposed to asbestos fibers. People that frequent the beaches affected should seek asbestos legal advice and medical attention right away. There is no way of knowing how many people were exposed to asbestos fibers when the sand was kicked up or the water disturbed. All one can do is find out the bad areas to see if they have frequented the particular area.
Exposure to asbestos could result in the development of mesothelioma cancer as much as fifty years after exposure. Asbestos attorneys can advise you what to do if you suspect that you have been exposed to this asbestos on one of the Chicago beaches. The asbestos lawyers will know more about the contamination and can further help you decide the next steps to take.
As of now, there is no asbestos removal being done at any of the beaches.
