Asbestos Abatement
Although documented to be one of the most dangerous chemical compounds responsible for causing cancer, asbestos is used even today for a large scope of different purposes. In western countries legislation forbids its use and those who were living in asbestos infested media have started asbestos abatement procedures, however in developing countries abatement is not even considered.
Asbestos abatement is called for when you think that your house, office or any other premise, where you spend time, was built with the use of asbestos-based products. This procedure involves covering up, sealing or removing the material all together. According to law, asbestos abatement is done only during renovation, remodeling and maintenance. It is also done in emergency cases, such as situations when asbestos plumbing is damaged and there are leaks involved.
All asbestos abatement can only be done by specialized companies and workers who have been authorized by law enforcers in the state they practice abatement. The strict rules and regulations require that this procedure be done in an airtight environment (all air conditioning channels will be closed) and the workers wear special respirators and clothing that will be disposed of after the operation is finished. After the abatement is considered done, air samples will be tested under phase-contrast microscopes which will give accurate results of asbestos concentration in the area. If the concentration is normal the space will be open for normal occupancy. All these protection methods are needed as asbestos can break into extremely fine dust that is easily airborne and when inhaled leads to serious illnesses.
It is also important to know that, even though there are many companies that perform asbestos abatement, the price of the operation is quite steep and that is why before going out and asking for this service, you need to be certain you need it. Not every ceiling and not every pipe consist of asbestos and you can find this out by having proper tests done. What happens is that a team comes and takes samples of the materials you suspect to be dangerous and samples of the air in your house and perform laboratory tests. Only after the tests show presence of asbestos should you ask for asbestos abatement.
On the other hand, there are people who hear about asbestos and its hazards but who do not care and who are not interested how and with what material their houses were built. Do not play with your life! Ask the builder company, the former owner of the house or your land lord if you are a tenant and find out what was used to put together your home. If you find out that it was asbestos bases materials do not wait any longer; ask for asbestos abatement procedures and get yourself medically examined!
