Asbestos Cancer

Scientists have been struggling during these past decades to discover both the cure and the triggering cause of cancer. Some results have come up with possible causes for some types of cancer and asbestos seems to be the element that triggers the so called asbestos cancer in an estimated of over 4000 people per year.

Direct asbestos exposure seems to be the main way through which people become sick, although one can develop asbestos illnesses only by living with a person who has come in contact with the deadly chemical.
Most people are exposed to asbestos at work, as there are industries that use asbestos-based products as subcomponents, but it is also common to live in a house that was built with asbestos or use textiles that were fabricated out of this compound.

Some people do not even realize the hazard they are in, due to the fact that symptoms of asbestos cancer can appear decades after the contact. Asbestos cancer can be developed by any individual regardless of race and sex; however it is more frequent in men.

The symptoms of asbestos cancer are somewhat diffuse and can be mistaken for symptoms of other diseases. Usually, mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) manifests starting with light dyspnea, chest pain, lasting cough, weight loss and fatigue. Because these symptoms can be attributed to stress or flues they are overlooked by patients. At this time it is best if the person sees a physician who will know what tests to perform. In order to diagnose the asbestos cancer a doctor will perform several tests including x-rays, CT scans, MRIs. If asbestos cancer is actually diagnosed there are several types that can be found.

One of the most common asbestos- caused cancer is lung cancer, which is even more aggravated if the patient is a smoker. Lung cancer is a rapid developing disease in which the alveoli (lung cells that help us breathe) of the healthy lung are covered by malign cells. This is usually found in patients who have been exposed for a long period of time to a large quantity of asbestos dust. The inhaled dust had stuck to the lung and in time (up to 45 years) it modified the way that cells function making cancer appear.

Other forms of asbestos cancer attach the heart, the kiddies or the abdomen. What happens is that the protective membrane that holds organs is attacked by asbestos dust; at that point the membrane starts to thicken (due to the multitude of the cancer cells) and the organs no longer function correctly.

Diagnosed in time, asbestos cancers can be cured with surgery in some cases or with non-invasive methods in other cases. Doctors may not yet have all the answers but they do have the tools to help you if you get diagnosed at the right time. One thing is certain: the asbestos cancer has to be nipped in its bud otherwise this plaque cannot be stopped.
