Asbestos Exposure

Proof of asbestos exposure and its effects dates back to the Roman and Egyptian times, yet even in the early years of the 21st century people do not take cautions so as to avoid coming into contact with asbestos. Nearly everyone can be at risk to come in contact with this chemical, as it has been extremely used in industry and, what is more, it is a natural compound that can be stumbled on accidentally.

The most frequent cases of asbestos exposure appear when working in an industry that requires its use. Civil constructions, for example, are some of the branches that have been using asbestos extensively; asbestos sheets, asbestos water pipes, asbestos roofing and asbestos electrical wires are very common in our houses. Not only did the workers who built the premise were exposed but the inhabitants will be exposed as well.

One can be the victim of asbestos exposure even when on holyday. Many cruise- ships and yachts have been built with the use of asbestos materials so as to protect the ship form fire hazards or to insure sound proof environment. Furthermore, asbestos curtains and blankets were common, at a certain point, because they reduced the fire hazard level-asbestos being fireproof fiber. If you have a family member, or someone you spend time with who has been exposed to asbestos materials, you as well count as victim to asbestos exposures.

As you can see there are various ways of becoming involved with this chemical. Asbestos exposure can cause several illnesses, the most common being asbestosis (chronic lung ailment), lung cancer, mesothelioma (rare type of cancer that affects abdomen and chest membranes) and kidney cancer. Therefore, if you fear you have been exposed to asbestos see your physician immediately, inform him about the type and length of exposure and ask for treatment immediately, even if you do not present symptoms.

Most people today know or have heard of asbestos exposure hazards and that is why the number of asbestos related illnesses has dropped in developed countries. The tragic part is that asbestos exposure is still endorsed in underdeveloped countries. Poor education and inexistent legislation allow the use of asbestos in many fields thus this malady is shifting towards the poor states of the world. Even more outrageous is the fact the workers are being lied to (all over the world) in regards to what they deal with. Employers do not tell them of the material, do not give them any protective measures and refuse to deal with sickness cases.

If we are lied to, misinformed or not informed at all, there is practically nothing we can do to avoid this malicious asbestos exposure. What we can do, though, is be inquisitive and not accept all information as correct and if we do realize there are wrong-doings we should stand up for our rights. When it comes to asbestos exposure and its threats it is not lose of money we talk about, nor do we discuss lose of time; we talk about losing our lives!
